Saint John Facts
Mrs. Lena O'Ree had a simple motto: Take the wrong and make it right - one at a time. In 1936, Mrs. O'Ree led ten black women into the YWMCA and into the history books, officially breaking the color barrier in the whites only institution. In the 1930s, she hosted the city's only black radio show and, in 1959, she helped to integrate the Admiral Beatty hotel, the city's finest hotel at the time.
